Bivalent iron-oligosaccharide complex composition

Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled complex exhibiting single peak in the gel-filtration of a specific fractional molecular weight, stable in alkaline region and usable as a hemantic having excellent stability, by culturing a yeast in a sugar- containing nutrient medium in the presence of an iron compound. CONSTITUTION: A yeast belonging to Saccharomyces genus, Metschunikowia genus, etc., is cultured in a sugar-containing nutrient medium in the presence of an iron compound and the supernatant liquid of the obtained culture liquid is subjected to adsorption chromatography. The objective bivalent iron- oligosaccharide complex composition can be produced by the gel-filtration of the adsorbed component using a gel having a fractional molecular weight range of about 0W1,500. The composition is stable at 7W11pH and has an absorption ratio through the gastro-intestinal tracts of ≥55% and intake ratio to hemoglobin of ≥30% when infused to the stomach of a rat at a rate of 250μg of iron per 160g of the body weight of the rat.
